The Spanish National Bioinformatics Institute has been one of the first european networks to coordinate national developments and research initiatives in bioinformatics. Since its inception it has been active in the development of tools and analysis systems, it was one of the drivers in the introduction of web services for system integration and it has been active in training initiatives and providing support to many sequencing projects. Through its collaboration with the Supercomputing Center in Barcelona it offers the bioinformatics research community the possibility to adapt their methods to a HPC (high performance computing) environment.
The activities of the INB are focused on the following areas:
- To generate and apply bioinformatics solutions to identified needs in the different genomic and proteomic projects.
- To support the development of bioinformatics and computational biology in Spain.
- To support local bioinformatics groups and provide training.
- To develop internal projects within the context of INB activities.
- To provide support to national companies in the biotechnology, biomedicine, genomics and bioinformatics sectors.
- To contribute to high quality Bioinformatics training
- To participate in international consortia and projects.
The INB was set up to work with the following groups:
- Bioinformaticians (particularly small groups) that need software and hardware resources, as well as guidance and specific training.
- Biologists in general, by facilitating the use to integrated computational services and access to training activities.
- Genomics projects, by providing them with integrated analysis platforms, organized analysis paths and direct access to experts.
- Companies in the areas of biotechnology, biomedicine, genomics and bioinformatics. The INB was set up to help disseminate their portfolio of projects and services, enabling them to participate in large-scale projects and facilitating their access to expertise and training.
- Participation in international consortia and projects.
