The Ensembl comparative genomics team is seeking a talented bioinformatician

Job description: The Ensembl Project (http://www.ensembl.org) is a collaborative project of the European Bioinformatics Institute and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute which provides annotation and analysis of chordate genomes. We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic researcher or a skilled programmer to be part of the comparative genomics group of Ensembl. The successful candidate will work on improving our knowledge and understanding of the evolutionary history of the vertebrate genomes. As part of the team, the post holder will also be involved in production activities as well as in maintaining and developing the production pipeline and the associated Perl API.

The projects of the Vertebrate Genomics team at the EBI includes the Ensembl project, the European Genome-phenome Archive and 1000 Genomes data coordination centre (DCC). The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus at Hinxton, near Cambridge, UK.

Qualifications and experience: The ideal candidate should hold a PhD degree in molecular biology or bioinformatics, and have at least 2 years experience of Perl programming or should have a computational background and a demonstrable interest in comparative genomics. A high proficiency in Perl and shell scripting is essential and the post holder will be expected to be comfortable working in a Unix environment and with relational databases. Experience in Java and/or C++ programming would be beneficial but not essential.

The successful candidate will be self motivated and capable or working both independently and within a closely interacting team of scientists in an international organisation. (S)he should enjoy the challenges and excitement associated with working in a fast moving field.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

Contract: An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review. Closing date: 1 August 2010
